Alumni Newsmakers: December 21, 2005

Dr. John L. LaMattina '71, Senior Vice President of Pfizer, Inc. and President of Pfizer's Global Research and Development, will be awarded R&D Direction magazine's Top 10 Pipeline Award. Dr. LaMattina is the author of 23 scientific publications, holds 15 U.S. patents, and received the 1998 Boston College Alumni Award of Excellence in Science.

Sharon Tracey Barrett '83 was appointed to the District Court bench in Buncombe County, North Carolina.

Joseph H. Baldiga '84, J.D. '87, has been named by Boston Magazine and Law & Politics to the list of Massachusetts "Super Lawyers." In addition, he was selected by his peers to be included in the 2006 edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

Patrick McManus, J.D.'85, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of China Natural Gas, Inc., the first China-based natural gas public company in the US capital markets.

Frederick C. Flynn, Jr. '72 was appointed to ATMI, Inc.'s Board of Directors.


Undefeated heavyweight boxer Derric Rossy '02, a former Boston College defensive lineman, will fight for the New York State Heavyweight title on December 29, 2005 in Jamaica, Queens. Rossy is a rising superstar in the sport and is being touted as one of the best heavyweight prospects to come out of New York in years.

Joe Mullin, former Boston College hockey star who went on to have a Hall of Fame NHL career, has been named head coach of the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Current Students

Student Merideth Bolden made headlines this week when she took a bite of a blueberry muffin from Honey Dew Donuts and "got more than filling in her mouth." Bolden found a key and a key ring in the donut, after which she quipped "I cursed myself for not going to Dunkin' Donuts."
