  For Boston, for Boston,
  We sing our proud refrain!

  For Boston, for Boston,
  'Tis widsom's earthly fane.

For here all are one, and
  their hearts are true, and
  The towers on the Heights
  reach to Heaven's own blue.

  For Boston, For Boston,
  Till the echoes ring again!

Boston College Sports Shorts

After its first 6-1 start since 1957, the Boston College football team is ranked 12th in this season's first BCS poll. The team is also ranked11th in the USA Today Coaches Poll, and 13th in both the Associated Press and Harris Interactive polls.

As reported by the Houston Chronicle, NFLDraftScout.com lists Boston College DE Mathias Kiwanuka as the second-highest rated senior (and best overall senior defensive lineman) slated to enter the NFL draft this season. Also on the list at #17 is offensive lineman Jeremy Trueblood.

When Street & Smith published the Top 50 All-Time College Football Rankings, Boston College was #2 all-time for best graduation rates (behind Stanford University). See the full list here.

The Eagle received a 4 out of a possible 5 for "mascot ferocity" on the Street & Smith list. The Burns Library has a wonderful, in-depth virtual exhibit entitled: The Boston College Eagle: Origins and Development of the University Mascot. Check out all the great archived images.

Boston College free safety Jamie Silva received ACC Player of the Week honors.

Men's Ice Hockey

After a hearbreaking loss to Michigan to open the season, the men's ice hockey team rallied to beat Jerry York's former squad Bowling Green and is currently ranked #6 in the nation according to USCHO.com.

Former goaltender Scott Clemmensen recently saw some NHL action filling in for Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur in the third period of a recent rout by the Carolina Whale-icanes

USCHO.com has a nice article on Boston University's recent fall from grace. BU has gone an embarassing 8 years without a Hockey East title or a Frozen Four appearance. In that same time frame, Boston College has appeared in the Frozen Four seven times, won 4 Hockey East tournament titles, and one National Championship.

Women's Soccer

Although Boston College recently lost 4-1 to top-ranked UNC, the team bounced back with a 1-0 defeat of N.C. State.

The loss to UNC had at least one positive - fan interest was at a remarkable high. About 1,000 fans were turned away due to space and dozens remained to endure obstructed views, pressed against the outside of a chain-link fence surrounding the field. The Boston Globe has nice coverage of the game. UNC was led by phenom Heather O'Reilly, easily one of the top players in the sport today - and from my hometown.

Congratulations to Laura Georges, who was recently one of only 24 players in the world nominated for the prestigious FIFA World Player of the Year.

Ted Sarandis Updat

As previously reported, radio personality Ted Sarandis was recently ousted from his job at WEEI. Sarandis has been succeeded by Mike Adams, according to the Nashua Telegraph.

According to the story, WEEI program director Jason Wolfe and afternoon drive host Glenn Ordway harassed Sarandis often, "claiming he sounded tired and hoping he’d abandon his treasured gig." Sarandis allegedly had no contract, but WEEI didn’t want to fire a long-popular regular who had many loyal followers.

Field Turf

Th Field Turf of BC's Alumni Stadium was recently featured in the Boston Globe.
