Alumni Newsmakers: October 28, 2005

Poet Brendan Galvin, BC '60, has been named a finalist for the prestigious National Book Award. The National Book Foundation nominated Galvin's "Habitat: New and Selected Poems, 1965-2005," a collection of his 100 best poems of the past 40 years (available at amazon.com). Galvin, who currently resides in Truro, Mass, has authored 13 other books of poetry and has seen his work appear in 400 journals, magazines, textbooks and anthologies.

Sister Helene Hayes, who received her doctorate in Clinical Social Work from Boston College in 1993, was recently featured in the Boston Globe for her efforts to educate the world about sexual slavery. Hayes visited seven countries in the past year and a half, chronicling stories of sexual slavery, and has returned to the United States to work on a forthcoming book.
