  For Boston, for Boston,
  We sing our proud refrain!

  For Boston, for Boston,
  'Tis widsom's earthly fane.

For here all are one, and
  their hearts are true, and
  The towers on the Heights
  reach to Heaven's own blue.

  For Boston, For Boston,
  Till the echoes ring again!

Rev. J. Robert Barth Dies at 74

Father Barth, an English professor and the former dean of Arts and Sciences, died of cancer Wednesday at the age of 74.

As A&S dean, Fr. Barth helped to usher in what has been described as a "renewal" of the arts at Boston College; Fr. Barth established the Music and Theater departments and oversaw the opening of the McMullen Museum of Art, whose benefactor, John McMullen, died Sept. 16.

Fr. Barth also played a key role in boosting the sciences at BC by strengthening the physics program and facilitating major fellowships and grants for the Chemistry, Geology and Biology departments. In addition, Fr. Barth played a role in the effort to revise the University's core curriculum. That initiative, which was completed in 1991, resulted in an expanded core that put a greater emphasis on cultural diversity, writing and the arts, and the creation of a University Core Development Committee.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated this Monday, Sept. 26, at 10 a.m. in St. Ignatius.
