Coming off the heels of the recent exodus of two "key advocates of diversity" (both Donald Brown, director of the Office of AHANA Student Programs and Robert Scott, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, announced their plans to leave BC this summer), Boston College has hired a new Director of the Black Studies program.
BC hired Cynthia Young, currently an English professor at USC. Young holds a doctorate in American Studies from Yale University, where she also earned a master's degree. She completed her undergraduate degree at Columbia University.
This appears to be good news for this program, and diversity in general at BC. Hopefully the school will move quickly to fill the void that will be left after the departures of Brown and Scott; such action, along with the hire of Young, are particularly important for a school that has historically been criticized for its lack of diversity.
