  For Boston, for Boston,
  We sing our proud refrain!

  For Boston, for Boston,
  'Tis widsom's earthly fane.

For here all are one, and
  their hearts are true, and
  The towers on the Heights
  reach to Heaven's own blue.

  For Boston, For Boston,
  Till the echoes ring again!

Is Boston College on the Verge of Buying the Chestnut Hill Reservoir?

After increased incidents of crime around the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, and in anticipation of the forthcoming Boston College Master Plan, the Allston-Brighton TAB is reporting:
Residents think that Boston College is trying to pull a fast one on Brighton and is trying to buy the Chestnut Hill Reservoir without their knowledge.
BC spokesman Jack Dunn said residents are overreacting and there is no possibility of a sale because, simply, the land is not up for sale.

Apparently, local conspiracy theorists have inferred from the obvious desirability of that land and an editorial in The Heights that BC is trying to purchase the reservoir in some secret, behind-closed-doors deal.

Of course, such an inference is not completely outrageous; if this ever did happen, it would not be the first time. In the late 1940s, BC purchased the Lawrence Basin, filled it, and began to construct Lower Campus. What remained is now the Chestnut Hill Reservoir. History lesson here and here.

How times have changed. As the Heights reports, back then, "neither Boston nor Newton saw the expansion as threatening or imposing, and did not foresee the growth that the filling would bring."
