  For Boston, for Boston,
  We sing our proud refrain!

  For Boston, for Boston,
  'Tis widsom's earthly fane.

For here all are one, and
  their hearts are true, and
  The towers on the Heights
  reach to Heaven's own blue.

  For Boston, For Boston,
  Till the echoes ring again!

Boston College: In Quotes II

Now time for the second installment of "Boston College: In Quotes," a collection of BC-related soundbytes from the past few days. See the first installment here.

It looked like Duke around here.

-Gene DeFilippo, Boston College Athletic Director, reacting to the line for student season tickets

When Chris Fowler's Blackberry went off during a recent broadcast of ESPN's College GameDay, the host snuck a peek at the ominous text message from his wife: There's an alien hovering over your shoulder ... The show was live from Boston College, not Roswell, N.M., and the extraterrestrial being was of the inflatable variety.

-Paola Biovin, columnist for azcentral.com

The fans are showing that they care tonight. We want to give back to them and have a great season. We'll be ready.

-Craig Smith, a preseason first-team All American

I'm typing this from the Tip O'Neil memorial library on the leafy campus of Boston College. Were I ol' Tip, I'd be rightly pissed at my memorial library. It smells awful in here, like a drunk's soiled underpants the day after a titanic bender.

-Blogger "Mesmerization Eclipse"

Does this abbreviated list of facilities that BC provides its arts students sound state of the art to you? Are we providing our Division I student performers with Division I facilities?

-Anthony and Will Nunziata, Heights columnists

BC is a special place. [This University] has that special quality that is not easy to define. BC is more than the buildings [on campus]; it is the people.
-George Ladd, a veteran BC professor since 1969

Re ...

* Gene: The irony of that quote is that it should be the other way around. Duke's West Campus is basically a rip-off of the original plan for BC -- except that they had tobacco money to finance the thing and get it all built (in the 1930s).

* Paola: Isn't it nice to see a columnist for a city paper revving up the townspeople for a college game? This aint the Boston Globe.

* Craig: We are on the edge of our seats already...

* Mesmer: I can't think of anything more sacreligious than trashing Saint Tip on his own sacred grounds, let alone from his "memorial" shrine. What smell anyway? (S)he must be on a laptop in the (wo)mens room after Baked Beans night at Addie's...

* Ant & Will: Thats a Division I Op-Ed.

* George: A professor who isn't bitter about not being across the river ... now that's special.

Anon - Do you recall where you heard that bit about Duke's West Campus being a rip-off of the original plan for BC - or is it something you just put together yourself?

No this has been well-documented. There's a good article about the influence of the original BC plan on many other later campuses in: "Studies in Medievalism" (v. 3, no. 2, fall 1990)
