  For Boston, for Boston,
  We sing our proud refrain!

  For Boston, for Boston,
  'Tis widsom's earthly fane.

For here all are one, and
  their hearts are true, and
  The towers on the Heights
  reach to Heaven's own blue.

  For Boston, For Boston,
  Till the echoes ring again!

The Boston College _______ Eagles

There is an unfortunate trend of people referring to Boston College athletic teams as the “Golden Eagles,” or, worse, the “Screaming Eagles.” This has been a pet peeve of mine for some time.

Let’s get something straight.
Boston College athletics teams are the Eagles. They are not golden, screaming, or bald. The “Screaming Eagles” refers to the Boston College Marching Band. Or to the Minnesota State Screaming Eagles, coached by Hayden Fox. But not the Boston College Eagles.

This has always bothered me, and I was reminded of it while reading an article about the traffic woes encountered by a Floridian visiting Beantown for the BC-FSU football game. I have seen and heard this error in so many different places, even at the Motor City Bowl website.

What is the origin of this erroneous moniker?
Why has it been perpetuated by seemingly good-intentioned journalists and commentators everywhere?

THANK YOU for putting into print something that has been bothing me too--although I've only noticed it this year.

In a similar vein, I cringe when I read "Boston" or "Newton" in the dateline of a BC article--its Chestnut Hill, dammit!
